Frequently Asked Questions

  • Grail Nutrients contain ideal amounts and ratios of micronutrients throughout the life cycle of the plant, whereas competing nutrient brands contain unbalanced amounts of micronutrients, creating excesses.

All of our nutrients are rapidly available to the plant, for maximal precision.

Grail Nutrients line is designed to make a grower’s life simple… use only two products in any part of the cycle, and achieve your best plant fertility of all time.

Most importantly, the flower and resin produced by plants fed with Grail Nutrients is dense, sticky, terpene rich, vibrant in color, and burns smooth with light ash. The proof is in the pudding, and Grail is one of the strongest tools a cultivator has in the quest to produce the best flower possible!

  • Right now we are not yet set up for e-commerce, or in retail. Both are in motion and coming soon! • Grail Nutrients products were formulated by our agronomist and founder David Cilia.

David has an extensive background and education in agronomy specific to cannabis, as well as decades of experience cultivating cannabis, and is a cannabis and hash connoisseur himself, “one of us.”

David has a B.Sc. degree from the University of Vermont in plant and soil science, with a concentration in botany. From there, David has developed custom liquid feeds and consulted on agronomy for over 50 cultivation sites over the past 20 years, helping cultivators to overcome a vast array of challenges…

    -pest and pathogen pressures

    -abnormal irrigation water chemistry

    -fertility deficiencies

    -improving IPM programs

    - irrigation system upgrades

    -leaf tissue nutrient content analysis

    -SOP development

  • Grail Nutrients currently makes 5 products… our Base nutrient concentrate which is used with every feed regardless of growth stage, and then 4 stage-specific liquid concentrates (Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D) that are each formulated for a specific growth phase. Each product is available in various sizes, ranging from 5 gallon jugs to 270 gallon IBC tote cubes, to meet the needs of growers of every scale.

  • Silicon containing products (those containing potassium silicate) are compatible with Grail Nutrients, but should be mixed or injected FIRST, PRIOR TO the addition of Grail Nutrients.

Compost tea, kelp and molasses are compatible and can be mixed with Grail Nutrients.  Microbial inoculants containing Trichoderma or Bacillus species such as xxx (insert Latin binomial for the two stains of Bacillus found in DN and Serenade) can also be mixed with Grail Nutrients.

pH Up and pH down can be mixed with Grail Nutrients, and are recommended to be mixed/injected AFTER all other products.

  • We strongly recommend against using supplements containing NPK and/or any micronutrients with Grail Nutrients, as our formulas contain robust amounts of all plant essential elements in precisely balanced ratios.  Adding more nutrition could disrupt this balance and cause damage to plants, on top of additional spending on these unnecessary products.

  • Grail Nutrients contain everything that a healthy, fast-growing plant needs in robust and balanced amounts, and so we do not recommend adding other NPK fertilizers or products containing micronutrients.

Adding silicon-containing supplements may help improve overall plant health and vitality as silicon has been scientifically shown to be beneficial to many plants.

Trichoderma-containing products are compatible with Grail Nutrients, and using them can be very beneficial to overall plant health, particularly in situations where there is known or suspected root disease such as Fusarium or Pythium.

  • We recommend using Grail Nutrients every time you water your plants.  Grail’s line is compatible with compost tea so if you would like to use compost tea we recommend combining it with the feeds, rather than alternating between tea and Grail.  Watering plants with only compost teas without Grail Nutrients can wash away/dilute the concentration of Grail in the root zone to a level that may be too low for healthy growth.

  • We recommend flushing for 7 days with just water at the end of the bloom cycle in order to facilitate ripening.

Flushing is recommended, but not mandatory, and we do have customers who grow indoor commercially with no ability to flush or even accommodate runoff that produce some of the most sought-after flower in California with Grail Nutrients without flushing.

  • YES. Plants want to drink from the Grail, whether they grew up drinking it since they were little or even if they didn’t find the Grail until they were full grown! As long as you know where you are in your cycle, you can switch over entirely to Grail today. Please make sure to feed according to our Feed Chart.

  • We recommend watering your plants with a nutrient solution in a pH range of 6.4 to 6.7.  Depending on your input water, once you add the recommended amount of Grail Nutrients, your nutrient solution may be right in this sweet spot for pH. If it is not, you may need to add either pH up or down to bring it into the optimal range.

  • Grail’s top priority is our cultivators’ success, which depends on maintaining a growing environment free of pathogens. In an effort to help stop the spread of pathogens, we cannot allow used containers back into our facility.

Grail Nutrients do not contain anything toxic so our containers are recyclable, and we encourage you to recycle or repurpose used containers. It is possible to recycle IBC totes by clicking on the following link www.schuetz.net/ticket or calling the number on the tote 1-888-724-8389

  • Depending on the size of the order and current inventory, the lead time can range between 1 and 10 business days. If you are on a tight time schedule, please CONTACT US to let us know your target date, and we will do our best to accommodate.

  • Yes, we offer commercial bulk discounts.  Check out our COMMERCIAL CULTIVATION page, and contact us to discuss your needs, and we will offer the best pricing possible.

  • Grail Nutrients cost less, are easier to use (only use 2 products in any feed), and generally produce the highest-grade flower and trichomes. The agronomy of Grail’s formula is complete and balanced, whereas most of the other popular fertilizer lines lack certain essential elements, and contain detrimental excesses of others. We have yet to receive a complaint of a decrease in quality from a customer after a trial with Grail, they have all converted completely.

  • There are many growers who have transitioned from other brands to Grail Nutrients, and report an increase in product quality, at a similar or improved yield. We have yet to have a cultivator trial Grail and report a drop in yield or quality. There are many factors beyond just nutrients that affect yield and quality, such as environment and genetics. Try it for yourself, and see how your garden takes off when it drinks from the Grail!

  • If you follow the feed chart it is highly unlikely that you will burn your plants with any fertilizer excess.  We strongly recommend against using more than the recommended amount of any nutrient or product, as it can burn plants. If you add other products containing NPK to the Grail Nutrient solution, it can burn plants.

  • Grail Nutrients products are not certified as fully organic, although we do use several OMRI-certified organic ingredients in our formulas. Through years of experience, we have found that for the majority of commercial growers that a synthetic or synganic nutrient line is much more dependable and cost-effective than fully-organic liquid feeds, which are much more complicated to dial in, and take longer to become plant-available. We have nothing but love for all growers including organic enthusiasts!

  • Grail Nutrients is a complete liquid concentrate product line, not bags of granular salts. Flower grown with Grail stands out from the salty mids and cardboard terps that are so common in commercial grows, producing flower that is commonly preferred by consumers even over “living soil organic” based on look, smell, taste, and ash. Grail’s formula doesn’t have the excesses in salts that other popular brands have that cause salinity buildup.

  • You can order it directly from us in our ONLINE STORE, or ask your local hydroponics retailer. If they don’t stock it, have them call us and we can get them online. For commercial cultivators, please click HERE to visit our commercial page or email alex@grailnutrients.com.

We have warehouse/logistics partners in most major markets so if you’d rather not receive a delivery to your address, we can probably arrange it to be delivered to a local warehouse for you to pick up.

  • We work with several delivery companies who can deliver most places , as long as you have adequate commercial truck access. Every day we have deliveries of pallets and 270g totes getting sent to commercial cultivation sites. It helps if you have a forklift, paved driveway, and even a loading dock. If you don’t have these things, there are creative solutions, us growers always find a way to get around hurdles and road blocks! In most markets we also have warehouse partners who can receive your order and you can pick it up in a 24 hour window, they can often help you load pallets into your truck as well. CONTACT US to discuss your needs and we will do our best to accommodate.

  • Grail Nutrients the brand is new for 2023! As founders, we have decades of cultivation experience, and our head agronomist David spent a long time developing and refining the formula, and has been custom blending it for commercial customers for over a year before launching the brand to the public.

  • Grail is powering multiple licensed and traditional market cultivators, in California and several other states. This includes outdoor, greenhouse, and indoor, growing in a variety of mediums including rockwool, coco, and soil. We stand behind Grail Nutrients products, and have yet to have a grower trial our line and not convert fully to it.

  • Depending on amount, we can often accommodate cash sales, either in person in Ukiah, CA, or at a bank branch in your area. If cash is your preferred method of payment, please CONTACT US and we can do our best to accommodate.

  • It depends on the size of the order, and the location. Please CONTACT US to discuss your needs, and we will do our best to get Grail Nutrients to your region!

  • Great question! Feel free to show them our website and let them know you want Grail Nutrients on their shelves, and encourage them to contact us so we can get them set up!

  • Of course! Click HERE to visit our feed chart page, where you can view and download our feed chart.

In order to calculate your Grail Nutrient concentrate usage, check out our usage calculator tool where you can input a few details about your crop and it will calculate how much of each product you will need for a complete cycle

  • No, in fact a primary purpose of Grail Nutrients is to offer cultivators the lowest cost complete nutrient line on the market. It is very likely that your feed gallons of Grail Nutrients will cost less than what you have been using previously.

  • Grail Nutrients is not an IPM product or pesticide, and isn’t designed with the purpose of combating mold, mildew, or pests. Grail Nutrients does help plants maintain very healthy fertility, which gives them a much stronger defense and deterrance to pests and pathogens than plants with inadequate fertility. As a result, most gardens fed with Grail Nutrients have minimal problems with mold, mildew and pests, especially when their environmental conditions are ideal, and a robust IPM program is applied.

  • Grail Nutrients work great with injectors and drip irrigation. Flushing lines after feeding with Grail is recommended, but not required.

  • We recommend using Grail Nutrients products within a year of purchase. We have not received negative feedback from customers using the products past a year, so it is generally still fine to use. We always recommend the “first in, first out” approach to nutrients, as long as the first in are still within their recommended shelf life.

  • Grail Nutrients products can be stored at warm temperatures, but cold temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit should be avoided.  We recommend against storing in direct sunlight, as the UV in sunlight can degrade the containers.

  • If you are a commercial cultivator feeding over 2,000 liquid feed gallons a week, and have a current ag suitability lab test on your water, please CONTACT US, and explain your situation and we will explore what we can do to customize your nutrients to avoid excesses, and give you some advice on utilizing other products like citric acid to address your issues if appropriate.

  • Yes, same chart, same application rates. Many in-ground growers water or feed less than above ground growers, and thus require less overall Grail Nutrients to produce a given amount of canopy.

  • Rapid growth is something that often surprises growers when they trial Grail Nutrients, as growth can be considerably more robust than what they have experienced with other nutrient programs. As you gather data on your improved veg times, you can adjust your schedule to flip sooner on future crops, or plant a little later for outdoor.

For the current crop, consider switching initiating flowering by reducing photoperiod to 12/12 earlier than usual.  You can also switch from Part A to Part B earlier to reduce nitrogen, which can reduce vigor and stretching.  In addition, consider reducing temperatures and ensure that your plants are getting adequate light to prevent low-light stretching, if that is a factor. If you have adjustable spectrum LED’s or the ability to switch bulbs, Increasing the proportion of blue to red light can help reduce plant stretching by encouraging tighter internodes.

  • NO, this is not a mistake, and YES this will be enough fertilizer to reach their full potential. Grail Nutrients was developed and refined over the course of many years and crop cycles with the help of leaf tissue nutrient analysis. Grail’s formula is structured to give the plant exactly what it needs when it needs it, without excesses. Most other commonly-used nutrient lines have much more excess and imbalance, which is why they require a higher EC in order to feed the plant as close to what it needs as is possible with their formulas.

Please note, the EC changes on the feed chart are the CHANGE to expect from adding Grail to whatever your starting water was at, not the final EC

  • In this situation, if you must switch either early or late, it is usually better to switch from A to B or from B to C earlier rather than later, as both B and C still contain adequate nitrogen for longer season varieties to continue to grow and yield well.

We do not recommend switching an irrigation section to Part D when there are plants with three or more weeks until harvest. Part D is specifically formulated to harden off flowers and promote exceptional cannabinoid and terpene accumulation right before harvest and will cause a color fade.

  • NO, Grail is a complete program with specific amounts of both calcium and magnesium to give plants optimal nutrition. It’s already in there!

  • Rest easy, Grail Nutrients does not contain toxic heavy metals, and when fed at recommended dilution rates it will not cause any lab tests to fail for heavy metals. If your soil or water contains heavy metals however, Grail Nutrients cannot prevent the plant from uptaking them or accumulating toxic levels from those sources.

  • This is not uncommon, particularly on +Part C and +Part D, and does not mean that the nutrients have gone bad. It is almost always beneficial microbes like trichoderma, or a harmless biofilm.

  • We recommend to use your entire nutrient solution promptly after mixing and pH adjusting it. If you must make a batch tank and use it for more than one day, it is best to check and adjust the pH prior to each watering to ensure it is in the proper range, especially when the nutrient solution contains +Part C or +Part D.

  • When growing with LED lights, many growers find better results with monitoring their media EC, and building a higher EC than they would use under HPS lights. This is often accomplished through smaller irrigation events with no runoff during days 1-21 to get the EC up to 9 or so, and then increasing irrigation volume to achieve runoff in order to drop the media EC by 1-2 per week after that until it gets to about 4.5 for most of the bloom stage. Many growers also find improved results with “dry backs” in the first 3 weeks of bloom and the last 2 weeks, by letting the media dry out more later in the day and early morning, which stresses the plants slightly and can lead to increased yields and resin production particularly under LED lighting.

  • You don’t need to! Our base contains a strong and consistent dosage of P and K, and the K is supplemented by the letter parts to make it even stronger! If you would like to give your plants a boost in K during transition to reduce their stretch, you can substitute +Part C for +Part B for the first week or two of the bloom stage. We do not recommend using any products with significant NPK along with Grail, as they can create excesses and imbalances.

  • Rootisimo is a microbial inoculant made with specific species and amounts of microbes. Growers who have used it have reported amazing results and improvements in plant health. It is currently still being perfected in our R&D process. It is a dissolvable powder that can be mixed with nutrients in water, and drenched into the root zone in a normal irrigation event. The recommended app rate is 0.25 grams per gallon 2x weekly, or 0.5 grams per gallon 1x weekly. Since it is a biological product, when using it in a drip system it is best to flush your lines with fresh water after watering with Rootisimo in order to ensure it is out of the lines and won’t grow in your lines.

  • At the moment, Grail’s complete nutrient line is not available in a powder format, as we use some liquid ingredients to make it. We have had many requests for a powder version, and may introduce one in the future. Our number one goal is quality and performance, so nothing is rushed and quality will not be sacrificed for cost.
